Hazrat Inayat Khan Foundation was founded in 2004, officially registered under section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956, that guarantees not-for-profit. It is located in Basti Hazrat Nizamuddin, which is an 800 years old village in Delhi that got usurped by the city's growth. The "Basti" (Neighbourhood) is home to an insular community suffering the effects of extreme poverty. The foundation seeks to alleviate these effects by creating programs that allow the poor to help themselves, principally in the areas of Education, Health and Livelihood. Currently, the foundation runs a community health centre, education centres, vocational training courses, a thrift and credit program, and a women's micro-enterprise unit.
In addition to this work, the foundation also collaborates with other non-profits and associations to engage in programs, workshops and initiatives for physical, mental, spiritual and educational development. Much of the work serves to aid the poor or weaker sections of the society.
The project has 50 staff members, many of whom come from the community. It is financed largely by private donations from individuals & donor agencies. The project values are influenced by the spiritual ideals of Hazrat Inayat Khan, the founder of the international Sufi order. It strives to provide people, especially the poor and vulnerable, with opportunities and resources, so that they can realize their hidden potential and determine their own future.
